Charlton Kings are hoping to produce their Sunday best when they host White Waltham in the National Village Cup tomorrow.

They are through to the last 32 and hopes are high that they can go all the way to the final at Lord’s on Sunday 6th September.

This is the first season that the club have been eligible to take part in the competition and chairman John Watkins said: “It’s a great competition, we’re just four games away from the final.”

They set up the chance to take on White Waltham, who are from Berkshire, by beating Frampton-on-Severn by 102 runs in the Gloucestershire regional final almost two weeks ago.

Ben Lord top-scored with a quicker than a run-a-ball 77 in his side’s 232-9 in 40 overs and then took 3-35 as the visitors were dismissed in 31.3 overs.

“It was a good win over Frampton,” said Watkins.

That game was at Ryeworth and Watkins, who took over as chairman towards the end of last year, was delighted with the support that the players received.

“We must have had 100-plus people supporting us,” he said. “What was wonderful was that we had players from the women’s softball team watching, representatives from the youth section and coaches from the youth section.

“We had people from the village too. That’s very important to us because we are a part of the community.”

Charlton Kings run five Saturday’s men’s teams – their flagship team are in the Gloucestershire Division of the West of England Premier League – and Watkins continued: “We’ve also got a thriving women’s section, it’s growing week by week.

“Our boys and girls section too, we’ve got almost 300.”

White Waltham, who are third in Division 2A of the Thames Valley League, booked their place in the round of 32 of the National Village Cup with a six-wicket win at Cookham Dean in the Berkshire and South Oxfordshire regional final.

Adil Pervaiz took 4-39 as Cookham Dean were dismissed for 160 in 37.5 overs before Ben Scarborough hit an unbeaten 67 to steer his side to victory with 5.4 overs remaining.
