Gloucestershire switch focus back to T20 as they head for Essex
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Friday, 4th July 2025, 12:00
Gloucestershire head to Chelmsford for a must-win T20 Blast South Group game against Essex tonight (7pm).
Back-to-back victories against Kent and Hampshire have given the defending champions just the slimmest of chances of qualifying for the knockout stages.
Bottom-of-the-table Essex are the only team below Gloucestershire in the nine-strong group having failed to win any of their eight games.
Gloucestershire lost their first five and realistically need to win five, and probably six, of their remaining seven games if they are to reach the last eight.
Last season they squeezed into the top four after winning seven and tying one of their 14 games, finishing above Essex on net run rate.
Jack Taylor, who played for Hatherley and Reddings in the West of England Premier League’s Premier 2 Glos/Wilts on Saturday, will lead the side this evening.
Gloucestershire make a couple of changes with Marchant de Lange returning to the T20 squad for the first time this year, replacing Ahmed Syed, while Zaman Akhter comes in for Joe Phillips.
Gloucestershire's two most recent matches have been in the County Championship - draws against Glamorgan and Derbyshire - and their next seven games are all in the shorter format.
Their penultimate South Group game is against Sussex at Cheltenham College on day one of the Cheltenham Festival on Thursday 17th July.
They complete their campaign at Somerset the following evening.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
