Barnwood United Youth Under-17s celebrate their Severn Valley Youth League cup win at Gloucester City

All-conquering Barnwood United Youth Under-17s are celebrating after completing a league and cup double.

They clinched the Severn Valley Youth League with an 8-1 win over Welland Junior and then three days later added the league’s Under-17 Challenge Cup.

They overcame Abbeymead Rovers Youth Avengers 3-2 in the final, a final that was played at Gloucester City.

Their goals were scored by Aayaan Ali and Will Jones in the first half and George Ball midway through the second half before they were pegged back by two late goals.

Midfield engine Toby Gettings was named player of the match and manager Alex Bennett said: “I’ve been coaching this team since they were 10, it’s a really nice journey.”

The win over Abbeymead was one of four games that were played at Gloucester City as part of the league’s cup final double-header.

“It was lovely for the players to win the game at the stadium,” added Bennett. “Their pitch suits the way we play.

“We like to get the ball down and play football, it was a perfect surface. It was a very nice day.”

The players’ success is all the more impressive because at the end of last season they faced an uncertain future.

This is the team’s first season at Barnwood with Bennett describing it as a “perfect match”.

He said: “This is a group that has steadily climbed the ranks of youth football together.

“From their early days in the Severn Valley D League as under-12s, their development has been defined by consistency, resilience and belief.

“They went on to achieve a perfect season as under-13s, winning all 16 matches to lift the C League title.

“Promotions followed, with B League success at under-14s and consecutive third-place finishes in the highly competitive A League during their under-15 and under-16 seasons.”

Next season the club plan to enter an under-18 side into the Cheltenham Youth Floodlight League.

Two other cup finals were played at Longlevens at the weekend just gone.

Results – Under-12 Challenge Cup, Rockleaze Rangers Youth Reds 3 Cashes Green Youth 0; Under-13 Challenge Cup, Perdiswell Colts Condors 2 Longlevens Youth Lions 5; Under-16 Challenge Cup, Brockworth Albion Youth Badgers 3 Gala Wilton Youth 0; Under-17 Challenge Cup,  Abbeymead Rovers Youth Avengers 2 Barnwood United Youth 3; Under-14 Remy Davis Memorial Cup, Lydney Town Youth 2 Cirencester Town Youth 2 (Cirencester Town Youth won 3-1 on penalties);  Under-15 Challenge Cup, Abbeymead Rovers Youth Falcons 2 Wotton Rovers Youth Vulcans 2 (Wotton Rovers Youth won 5-4 on penalties).
