Dursley Town Reserves hope to complete the first leg of a treble when they take on Cam Bulldogs in the final of the Gloucestershire FA Intermediate Cup (North) tonight.

The table-topping Stroud League Division Three side are also through to the last four of the League Cup so they’ve got loads to play for over the last few weeks of the campaign.

“One of our last league games is against Rodborough Old Boys Reserves who are at the top of the table with us,” said manager Lee Matthews. “We could have a worldie and win all three or completely mess it up.”

The signs are certainly encouraging for Dursley, last season’s Stroud League Division Four champions, because they have won 16 and drawn one of their 18 league games this season, although Matthews recognises that his team face a tough test against Cam, a side who play a level above them in Division Two.

“I watched 45 minutes of their game the other day,” he said. “It’s going to be a tough game, they’ve got a good front three.”

Cam have had a disappointing league campaign – they are 10th in the 12-strong division – but have done well in the cup competitions.

“We’ve reached the League Cup final as well,” said player/manager John Frampton, a centre-back. “It’s been a bit of a weird season, we could win two cups but we could still get relegated.”

Frampton has been happier with the team’s league form since the turn of the year and they were certainly impressive when beating Uley 3-0 last month to book their place in the County Cup final at Bishop’s Cleeve.

Dursley, meanwhile, were actually beaten 2-0 in their semi-final but were subsequently awarded a walkover when Kings were found to have fielded an ineligible player.

Matthews is hoping that is a sign that it could be Dursley’s year, although if you ask him which competition he’d like to win most this season he says it’s the league.

“Two go up so we could be going into Division Two,” he said. “That’s important for the club. The first team play in Division One of the Northern Senior League, the reserves need to stay as close to them as possible in terms of our league position.”

Not that he’s downplaying tonight’s County Cup game.

“It’s a cup final,” he said. “It’s a local derby, there should be a decent crowd, the players all know each other, there are plenty of bragging rights.”
