Leaders Sharpness head to big rivals Filton Athletic for crunch clash in Gloucestershire County League
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Friday, 3rd April 2026, 09:00
The top two go head-to-head in a big Gloucestershire County League clash tomorrow.
Filton Athletic host leaders Sharpness in the first of two games between the teams this month.
With both sides having 10 games to play in the 17-strong division, Sharpness hold a four-point advantage and club secretary Tom Paterson said: “It’s a big game, it’s between the two of us for the title.”
They meet again at Sharpness on Tuesday 21st April and Paterson continued: “There are still a lot of games to cram in.
“We’ve got a County Cup final on the 29th as well.
“We’ve been the team out in front for nearly all of the season, but there are still 30 points to play for and you could say the title is still in Filton’s hands because they’ve got to play us twice.”Sharpness, who play Longlevens 2nds in the final of the GFA Senior Amateur Cup, have enjoyed a standout league campaign so far, winning 18 and drawing three of their 22 games.
They go into tomorrow’s game on the back of a 2-2 draw at fifth-placed Quedgeley Wanderers on Tuesday evening – Kieran Bennett and George Thomas got their goals – after overcoming third-placed Bishop’s Cleeve Development 3-1 at the weekend.
“Quedgeley are decent, they went into the game having just beaten Tewkesbury,” said Paterson.
“They’ve got a young side, full of energy. It was a bit disappointing because we were ahead twice but at the end of the season we may look at it as a valuable point after a good win the previous Saturday.”
Sharpness host Quedgeley on Easter Monday, one of eight home games in their final nine league fixtures.
“Our ambition is to be playing in Division One of the Hellenic League next season,” said Paterson.Copyright © 2026 The Local Answer Limited.
