Striker Alfie Jones is the star turn as Sharpness win the GFA Senior Amateur Cup
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 30th April 2026, 10:00
Alfie Jones was the hat-trick hero as Sharpness won the GFA Senior Amateur Cup in stunning style last night.
They overcame Longlevens Reserves 4-3 in the final at Kayte Lane with the 19-year-old Jones converting a penalty two minutes from time to clinch the victory.
“He showed bravery and real nerves of steel to take that kick,” said club secretary Tom Paterson. “He sent the keeper the wrong way.”
Longlevens Reserves, who are hoping to win the Northern Senior League Division One title over the next few days, had taken an early lead before Sharpness levelled through skipper Callum Dummelow.
The centre-half curled a shot in from the edge of the box and Paterson said: “It was with his left foot, his weaker foot. It was an excellent goal.”
Jones then put County League leaders Sharpness ahead but Longlevens were level before the break.
Jones restored his side’s lead with the best of his three – a left-footed shot with his weaker foot into the corner after combining with Marley Thomas – and Paterson continued: “Alfie’s played for the club for two or three years, he played excellently.
“He’s very good with his feet and holds up the ball well, he’s very relaxed in front of goal.”
Chairman Sam Paterson, Tom’s dad, was delighted with last night’s result.
“It was a brilliant night, a monumental game, nerve-jangling,” he said. “You could feel the tension, but I’m so chuffed for the players. We’re so proud of them.
“It’s been tough, we’ve been playing three games a week. We’ve got another game on Saturday and one on Monday.”
Both those are in the County League – at home to Ruardean Hill Rangers on Saturday and then at home to Tytherington Rocks two days later.
Sharpness are nine points clear of second-placed Filton Athletic with four games remaining. Filton, who are also in action twice over the bank holiday weekend, have five still to play.
“We’ve got quite a few walking wounded,” added Tom Paterson. “Ben Hemmings, an outfield player, had to take over from goalkeeper Pete Dykes during last night’s game and Callum [Dummelow] and Kieran Bennett also came off.”
