Hartpury golf students have completed a magnificent league and cup double after showing improvement in all aspects of their play throughout the season.

The team, who are all members of the Golf Academy at Hartpury, were beaten only twice en route to winning the British Universities and Colleges Sport Golf league title in the Western 2B division.

Having wrapped up one title, Hartpury made it a season to remember by winning the Western Conference Cup to complete the league and cup double.

As well as performing successfully as a team, the players have made great progress on an individual basis under the guidance of their coach Tom Motley since becoming members of the Hartpury Golf Academy.

George Bryant, who has represented Wales, has improved his handicap from 4 to plus 1 and recently tied for first place in the prestigious Duncan Putter competition at Southerndown Golf Club.

Alex Talbot played off 1 when he enrolled at Hartpury and now plays off plus 3; Reece Swain had a handicap of 11 when joining Hartpury and now plays off 1, while Joel Frost and Cameron Probert have also made good progress.

Matthew Ellis, the manager of the Golf Academy, said: “The players have shown great commitment throughout the season and it’s absolutely terrific that their efforts have been rewarded with a league and cup double.

“They’ve faced some long journeys, early starts and horrible weather, but they’ve always maintained their motivation and passion for the game, and consistently played with a smile on their faces.

“Considering this is our first real step into university golf, it’s a real credit to all the players and the coaching staff within the Golf Academy that they’ve made so much improvement and been able to achieve so much.

“The ongoing success of our students is a reflection of the effort they’re putting into their practice sessions, which are tailored around their academic timetables to ensure they have the best possible opportunity to reach their potential.

“We’re always aiming to provide our students with the opportunity to play at a high level of competitive golf and we’re looking forward to planning for next year.”
