Young Zach Norris is the king as he outflanks Grandmaster at Wotton Hall Social Club

Up-and-coming chess player Zach Norris has beaten a Grandmaster.

The 13-year-old Crypt School pupil beat Michael Adams in a one-off event at Wotton Hall Social Club in Gloucester.

The competition, which was organised by Wotton Hall Chess Club player Mike Ashworth, saw Adams take on 32 of Gloucestershire’s finest players simultaneously.

Ashworth, who is 26, was one of the 32 and he was one of four players to draw with Adams.

His younger brother Robert also earned a draw along with Cheltenham Chess Club duo Richard Freeman and Graeme Hood.

Norris was the only player to defeat Adams, who is from Taunton, and Ashworth said: “I expected Zach would have the best chance of obtaining a result and so it proved to be.

“It was a fun and successful evening.”
