Cirencester travel to Gordon League on Saturday looking to build on their 26-18 win against Gloucester Old Boys.

That win was 10 days ago – they had a free Saturday on the weekend just gone – and it was a victory that lifted them to seventh in the 12-strong Gloucestershire One with two wins and two defeats from their opening four games.

“It’s been a bit of a mixed start,” admitted new captain Oli Gibson. “We’ve had quite a lot of changes to the 1st team squad. A lot of new players have come through from the 2nd team and the Colts and a few of the older heads have stepped back.”

At 23, second row Gibson is one the more senior players. They won their opening game against newly promoted Tewkesbury 20-6 but then lost back-to-back games at home to Dursley (26-36) and away to Fairford (32-15).

“The Fairford game was disappointing,” said Gibson, “but against Dursley the boys fronted up and played well. Dursley are a tough team but I was really pleased with the performance.

“I want to move on from the Fairford game and we bounced back well against Gloucester Old Boys.”

Now Gibson is hoping for maximum points at Gordon League, who have won only one of their opening four league games, and there is certainly no shortage of ambition at Cirencester.

“The motivation is always to play at the highest level we can,” Gibson said. “If we play as we know we can we will do well.

“We want to play attractive rugby although we know that’s not always possible given the weather conditions.

“We’ve got the players and the character to play that style of rugby. We’re young and we’re fit enough, it’s about playing that style at the right times.

“In patches we’ve played very well this season but we need to do it for 80 minutes, not just 40 or 50.”
