Experienced Coney Hill front row forward Gavin Tippins is looked forward to the new season.

And it’s easy to see why because it is only a few weeks ago that the just-turned 45-year-old celebrated one of the great days of his rugby life.

He was part of the Coney Hill starting XV that lifted the RFU Community Cup Counties 3 Championship at Twickenham, beating Hucclecote 17-10, a game that will never be forgotten by the club’s supporters.

“It was a special day,” said Tippins, who played at tighthead. “To see the impact that result had, some of the older members were crying in the car park after the game.

“I think that cup run has re-engergised people. They’ve seen that if you put the effort in, anything is possible.”

And Tippins, who has been at the club for more than 20 years, is keen to remain a big part going forward.

“I’m going to carry on playing,” he said. “While the body is still willing I’m going to keep this going.”

And this is going to be another big season for the Counties 3 Gloucestershire North club because this will be their 80th season after being formed in 1947.

“It’s a big achievement and it’s something you have to celebrate,” he said “We’ve struggled a bit in recent years, but we’ve talked a lot about what it means to wear the Coney Hill badge.

“We’ve got a ready-made community around us and we’re a big part of that.

“It would be good if we can now push on towards the top of the league. We’ve got some young players coming through, hopefully next season will be another successful one.”
