It's double delight at Cheltenham North as girls win Midlands titles

Cheltenham North Under-16s celebrate their win

It was a day to remember at Cheltenham North Rugby Club as two of their girls’ teams clinched regional titles.

Both the under-18s and the under-16s, who are coached by Ian Parker and John Poulton respectively, were crowned Midlands champions after securing back-to-back victories at Stoke Road.

The under-16s kicked off proceedings, overcoming Buckingham 31-7 and then the under-18s – a combined Cheltenham North/Drybrook (Northbrook) team – followed up by beating Old Albanians 25-17.

“It was a great day,” said Scott Laird, who is assistant to Cheltenham North club chairman Paul Carter. “It’s a great achievement for both teams.”

Laird has a number of roles at the club, one of which sees him coaching the senior ladies’ team, and it’s fair to say that women’s and girls’ rugby has become a very big part of the club.

“We started up the girls’ rugby five years ago and we had just a handful of players,” continued Laird.

“Now we’ve got two age groups with about 40 girls in each and next season we’re hoping to set up an under-12s and an under-14s.”

The senior women’s team, who play in Women’s NC 3 South West (North), can also call on some 30 or 40 players and Laird added: “It’s all going well. The more success we have the more new players we are attracting, the numbers at the club are amazing.”
