James Holmes is looking forward to his second season as captain of Stow-on-the-Wold Rugby Club.

The 27-year-old is on familiar ground because he’s been with the club in Oddington Road since the under-10s and he said he had no hesitation in carrying on as skipper.

“I wanted to do it again,” he said. “I’ve been at the club a long time and I wanted to give something back.”

The speedy outside centre who describes his style of play as “quite confrontational” is hoping the club have better luck with injuries this season.

“We had 10 or 15 injured by the end of October last season,” he said. “That hampered the first part of the season.”

The last campaign was not a vintage one for Stow as they finished in the bottom four of Southern Counties North.

Holmes believes they can and will do better this time around.

Larry Cummins, the one-time Cheltenham back row, is the club’s new coach after a spell working with the club’s minis section and Holmes said: “Our aim over the next few seasons is to get promotion.

“We’ve been knocking on the door in the past. We’ve had a blip over the past couple of seasons and it’s something that we are definitely capable of achieving.”

Holmes has been encouraged by the numbers turning up for pre-season training and he will be looking to make a good start to the season when Stow open their league campaign in Buckinghamshire against Drifters on Saturday 9th September.
