After several years without any proper snow, Gloucestershire has been carpeted with the white stuff not once but twice this winter.

And with weather experts predicting the imminent return of the Beast from the East, there is a very real possibility of more snow this weekend, particularly on Sunday.

While kids up and down the county will love it, Lydney Tennis Club chairman Martin Godwin won’t be diving into his garden shed to dig out a sledge.

“The tennis club have got their Open Day on Sunday,” he said, “and they’re forecasting snow, it’s sod’s law!”

If the weather does allow, Sunday will be a fun day at the club, which has four all-weather outdoor floodlit courts and 200-odd members.

Head coach Rachael Wintle is one of the big driving forces behind the event. She will be holding coaching sessions in the morning and the club will host their Open Day in the afternoon.

“The day ends with Cardio Tennis which Rachael organises,” said Godwin.

So what exactly is Cardio Tennis?

“It’s tennis drills performed to loud music,” explained Godwin.

What sort of music?

“Pump up the beat modern music,” laughed Godwin, who is in his mid-60s.

It’s going to be a busy weekend at the club – weather permitting – because the club are holding a 12-hour tennis marathon on Saturday in aid of Sport Relief.

“It’s been organised by our website manager Jason Wong,” said Godwin. “We did it two years ago and raised £1,100.”
