Tennis ace Alicia Barnett targeting wildcard chance at Wimbledon
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Thursday, 11th June 2026, 09:00
Great Britain tennis star Alicia Barnett faces an anxious wait to see if she will be granted a wildcard for this year’s Wimbledon.
The 32-year-old doubles specialist, who has a career-high doubles ranking of world number 59, was competing in the Ilkley Open in West Yorkshire this week alongside Samantha Murray and is desperate to play at the All England Club in a few weeks’ time.
This year’s championships run from Monday 29th June to Sunday 12th July and Nigel Barnett, Alicia’s dad, said: “It’s an anxious time for everyone.”
Alicia, who is from Painswick, has been a regular at Wimbledon over the past few years.
“She’s actually performed best in the mixed doubles,” said her dad, who was in Ilkley this week.
“Her best result came in 2022 when she and her partner Jonny O’Mara beat Venus Williams and Jamie Murray to reach the quarter-finals.”
And some match it was too because they won the third set 18-16 in a tie-break after losing the first set 6-3 and winning the second set 6-4.
“She also reached the quarter-finals in 2024 with Marcus Willis, they played on No 1 court twice,” said her dad, who is president of Painswick Tennis Club.
“She’s played in all the Grand Slam events.”
These days the one-time Stroud High School pupil lives in Bristol.
She played for Great Britain in 2022 alongside the likes of Heather Watson and Katie Boulter, helping them to reach the last four of the Billie Jean Cup.
Her current world doubles ranking is 123.
