Tristan Maree is the last-over hero for Corse and Staunton against Tetbury after Matt Cox century
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Monday, 14th July 2025, 11:00
Number 11 Tristan Maree smashed the second ball he faced for four to clinch a thrilling last-over win for Corse and Staunton on Saturday.
The left-handed teenager came to the wicket with the home side still needing three runs to overcome Tetbury’s all out 193 in Division One of the Gloucestershire Cricket League.
“He swung at the first and missed and then swung at the second and connected, it was really exciting,” said club president Graham Bruce.
Corse and Staunton, who are top of Division One, went into the last over, bowled by James Job, needing four to win with their ninth-wicket pair at the crease.
Callum King took a single from the first ball but then Matt Brown fell next delivery to give Maree the chance to become the hero.
Sixth-placed Tetbury have already tied with Cheltenham 2nds this season – Job bowled the final over that day too, conceding just one run – and Bruce continued: “Tetbury are very good, they are the only team to have beaten us in the league this season.”
Home skipper Tim Dannatt lost the toss but Bruce added: “We thought 193 was a gettable target on a fast outfield.
“Callum King bowled very well to pick up four wickets while young Harry Tegg also bowled very well at the start of the innings.”
King took 4-27 from nine overs while Tegg claimed 1-18 from six and Corse and Staunton looked to be well-placed on 175-4 with the excellent Matt Cox closing in on his century.
The number three went on to reach three figures before falling for 102, an innings that included 11 fours and four sixes from 122 balls.
Te Shaun Zyun Alleyne’s 26 was the home side’s next highest scorer and when Cox was the sixth wicket to fall they needed only another eight runs.
Another three quick wickets made it very nervy before they managed to scramble over the line and Bruce said: “Matt Cox is one of our better batters, it was a good innings.”
Cox’s dad Adrian watched every ball because he was the club’s scorer and Bruce continued: “Matt’s younger brother Tom plays for the 3rds and mum Debbie plays for the women’s team.”
It was a good all-round day for the men’s senior sides because the 2nds defeated Gloucester 2nds by 60 runs in Division Five of the Gloucestershire League, while the 3rds, who play in Division 9C, overcame Ullenwood Bharat 3rds by seven wickets with Tom Cox taking 5-42.
“It was the fourth Saturday in a row that all three teams have won,” said Bruce.
The 2nds, like the flagship team, have their eyes on promotion. The 1sts were relegated from the West of England Premier League at the end of last season and Bruce added: “It’s going well but we’ve still got some big games. We go to Chipping Campden on Saturday and then we’re at home to Cheltenham 2nds the following week.
Chipping Campden are fourth in the 10-strong division while Cheltenham 2nds are second, 11 points behind Corse and Staunton with seven games remaining.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
