An 80-year-old grandad from Gloucester is organising a special golf day in memory of his son, who always wished to score a hole in one before he lost his battle to cancer.

The memorial golf day, arranged by Bill Turner for his son Arthur, is taking place at Gloucester Golf Club on Saturday on the anniversary of Arthur’s passing to raise funds for the hospice who helped care for him.

There will be 24 players taking part, some from Walls where Arthur worked for 25 years; Dowty, where Arthur’s brother now works, and family golfers.

Bill said: “Arty was a golf-crazy, fun-loving person who above all loved the world and it loved him right back.

“As he was such a keen golfer it seemed appropriate to do something golf-related to try and raise some funds for the hospice who cared for him.”

The golf day will raise funds for local hospice charity Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice, home to the only inpatient unit in Gloucestershire giving around the clock specialist hospice care.

Bill added: “Arthur died one year ago on 19th August at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice. The care given at Leckhampton is really a mixture of the environment in which the hospice is set, with beautiful grounds creating peace and serenity. Added to this is exemplary medical care, but the real winner is the ambience of the place created by all who work there.”

The players will descend on the golf club in Matson at 9am for bacon butties before the day gets into full swing at 10am with the first tee off. Funds are being raised by an entrance fee and raffle plus a series of special fundraising activities being organised on the day by the lead professional Keith Wood.

Fundraising for the hospice is a family affair. Arthur’s daughter Jess Carter, her husband Paul and her brother-in-law Mark all recently raised funds for the hospice walking 100km in 24 hours along the Cotswold Way, and they are well on their way to raising £3,000 from the challenge.

Alysia Cameron Price, Community Fundraising Manager at Sue Ryder Leckhampton Court Hospice said, “We’re so grateful for everything Bill and family members have been doing to raise funds for us in memory of Arthur.

“It is clear by how everyone speaks about him that he is a much-loved and missed son and father and a very keen golfer. The golf day will be a touching way to remember him. We wish them all the best with the event.”
