Paul Kelly likes his fishing. And that’s a good job for members of Breakingstone Angling Club because for the past 25 years he has been not only their chairman, but also their secretary and treasurer as well.

Paul insists the three jobs are not as arduous as they sound but it’s fair to say that the club, which is based in and around the Tewkesbury area, functions a lot better with his hand on the steering rod.

The club were formed out of the old Dowty Mining Angling Club.

“We used to have inter-divisional matches with other Dowty angling clubs,” recalled Paul, who was secretary and treasurer of Dowty Mining Angling Club. “But when we were made redundant we formed Breakingstone Angling Club.

“We amalgamated with another Dowty club and all the money we had accrued paid off two years’ rent.”

The club are so-called because they used to fish in Breakingstone meadow on the River Avon, opposite Healing’s Mill in Tewkesbury.

That is no longer the case and Paul says the club are searching for some water that they can call home.

They have been homeless for the past six or seven years but still have day trips out to other commercial fisheries.

The 25-member club have matches every other Sunday and among the places they regularly fish is Hillview in Twyning.

Paul says the club would love to rent or buy any water in the Cheltenham/Gloucester area and adds that the club’s members come from all over the county.

Paul has plenty on his plate because he works as part of the support staff for Gloucestershire Constabulary for the past 26 years and is a member of the Constabulary band.

He also helps run the Three Bs skittles team who play in Division One of the Cheltenham League.

His wife Lynne plays the French horn but, he says, has no interest in angling.

“Certainly not, but she likes to see the back of me when I go fishing,” laughed Paul.
