Many people’s weekends consist of relaxing and spending time with friends and family.

This is not the case for the members of Deer Park Archers.

Roger Crang, the club’s development officer, described the previous weekend as one where “there was no shortage of drama”.

It’s certainly a weekend to boast about when you’re “the top performing club in the UK by some margin”.

“More than 300 juniors from 123 clubs competed in the Junior National Indoor Championships at the National Agricultural and Exhibition Centre in Stoneleigh Park. We now have five new British champions, one silver and two bronze,” said Roger.

“Ella Gibson is a quadruple achiever – she is now British under-18 Compound Champion and overall British Compound Champion.

“She is a member of the winning Home Nations Championship making her debut for England, and qualified from her group in the Back2Back event taking place in the morning, but had to withdraw as she was representing England in a different competition in the afternoon.”

Ella isn’t the only one deserving praise. In fact, there’s quite a long list.

According to Roger, the whole weekend was full of “absolutely amazing performances”.

“Holly Clifford is now British under-16 Compound Champion and Chloe A’Bear achieved the title of British under-14 Compound Champion,” said Roger.

The list goes on.

“Imogen Colenutt is now the British under-16 Barebow Champion, Riley Spencer-Nice is now the British under-14 Champion and Ted Williams is now the third British under-16 Longbow champion,” Roger enthused.

“Emily Summers finished runner up British under-12 Barebow in her first National Championships and Alex Parker achieved third in the British under-12 Compound, just two points away from winning.

“All the hard work our juniors have put in over the past few months, the coaching and parental support provided and the tournament experience they have been gaining has once again produced great results.”

And while this is all outstanding, Roger believes that there is still more to come.

“There is no doubt that we will continue to be successful with the next generation of hard working archers already challenging for honours,” he said.

“We are currently working with a number of potential funders to see if we can improve our facilities, to build on our community and performance work still further.”

You don’t need to be hitting the gold for acceptance into the Deer Park community, though.

“It’s all about participation, the key requirement is a willingness to enjoy shooting and the social experience that goes with it, high performance is a bonus and most of us do not expect or even seek to attain that level,” explained Roger.

“Our school’s programmes and open community have-a-go sessions encourage individuals of all ages to try our sport.”

It’s clear that the club truly provide something special for the sporting community in Cheltenham.

In fact, this something is difficult to put into words.

“It is difficult to portray just how amazing these performances are from just one club in a highly competitive sport. Gloucestershire should be proud of the achievements,” said Roger.

You could argue that Deer Park Archers are putting Robin Hood to shame!
