Who likes to admit their age? Three members of Cirencester Athletics and Triathlon Club cannot hide their secrets due to their recent outstanding achievements.

The club’s senior female athlete and Rotarian, Yvonne Binks, celebrated her 70th birthday in October and just one week later ran the Bournemouth Marathon to set an inaugural club record for the FV70 category and so gaining a ‘good for age’ place in the 2018 London Marathon.

A couple of weeks later, just prior to her celebrating her 70th birthday, school governor at Andoversford Primary School, Ruth Fulford, smashed her own club 5km record, knocking over 30 seconds from the FV65 record.

Ruth also retained her title to win a gold medal in the Gloucester AAA Road Race Championships only last week.

The youngster of the group and trustee of the Churn Project, Liza Darroch, who will reach three score years and 10 in February, ran in the FV65 category at the Chester Marathon and has been selected to run in an England vest for the 2018 UKA Championships.

No stranger to even longer distances, she also completed the Lakeland 55 in the summer.

Their competitive performances have also been matched by their coaching and committee work with special emphasis on encouraging the beginners.

Throw in their granny duties for the 10 grandchildren they have between and the three of them live pretty busy lives.

Not surprisingly their mantlepieces are covered by trophies and awards them and they are fully deserved.

These three active septuagenarians certainly play their part in making Cirencester Athletics Club a successful and supportive club for young and old of all abilities.
