A local family are challenging themselves to complete a 100-mile cycle ride to raise money for Sue Ryder Leckhampton Hospice, who supported their wife and mother when she died.

Richard Cox, from Cheltenham, alongside his sons Simon and Jonathan, are taking part in the Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100 on Sunday 4th August. Also supporting them is their daughter and sister Charlotte McHugh, who will be cheering on from the sidelines with the latest addition to the family, seven-month-old Finley.

The family chose Sue Ryder as its chosen charity after losing their wife and mother Lynda in July 2018 after a long battle with ovarian cancer. Lynda was supported by Sue Ryder Leckhampton Hospice in her final weeks to ensure she was comfortable.

Richard and Jonathan are taking part in this fundraiser straight off the back of the Ride for Ryder 90km cycle which took place at the end of June. Together as a family they hope to raise £3,000 for the charity.

Speaking ahead of his challenge, Richard said: “Training for the 100 miles on the 4th August has been a significant and inspiring challenge. Losing Lynda, my wife for 44 years and their mother, has been difficult to handle and different for each of us.

“Putting our energies into raising money for Sue Ryder has provided a positive focus for us all.”

James Wright, senior events manager at Sue Ryder, said: “We are extremely grateful that Richard, Jonathan and Simon have chosen to take part in the Prudential Ride London-Surrey 100 to raise money for Sue Ryder.

“It’s only thanks to fundraisers, like them, that we’re able to continue to support people at the end of their lives. We wish the family lots of luck and look forward to cheering them across the finish line along with Charlotte and Finley!”
