The Cheltenham Trust and Active Gloucestershire teamed up to stage the third annual Special Olympics Gloucestershire Sports Day.

The event brought athletes from all over the county to Leisure at Cheltenham and the Prince of Wales Stadium to take part in 11 sports activities, ranging from golf and tennis to cycling and Bocca bowls.

This year saw a record number of young people and adults from across the region wanting to get involved, resulting in more than double the number of athletes with learning disabilities taking part since the event started.

Dan Brookes, chairman of Special Olympics Gloucestershire, said: “This event has become a real fixture in family calendars.

“The fact it is hosted for free by the Cheltenham Trust means we are able to fund more activities and get more people with a disability active, having fun and creating a social circle.”

Julie Finch, chief executive of the Cheltenham Trust, added: “Inclusion and diversity are very important to the Trust as we develop our sport and leisure offering.

“This event is a terrific example of how we can bring communities together and encourage an active, fun lifestyle.”

Deborah Potts, at Active Gloucestershire, said: “This event brings together disabled people, organisations working with disabled people, and activity providers.

“We’re delighted to be working closely with the Cheltenham Trust to increase opportunities for people of all abilities and ages to become active.”
