Leckhampton Tennis Club have so much to offer
Author: Roger Jackson, Posted: Tuesday, 30th December 2025, 09:00
Anyone for tennis? If the answer is ‘yes’, then get yourself down to the courts in Montpellier Gardens in the heart of Cheltenham on Saturday.
That’s where you’ll find members of Leckhampton Tennis Club, who book a couple of hard courts every Saturday from 1.30-3.30pm at this time of year.
“Anyone who is interested in joining us can contact our secretary Anne Gimingham [07719 737647] to confirm what courts we are on and so we can welcome them,” said club member Chris Owen.
Leckhampton Tennis Club have been going for a long time. They were founded in 1934, and while the club enjoy playing in Montpellier, their true home is a couple of miles away in the heart of Leckhampton.
They are based close to the entrance of Burrows sports field and their home is described as “a haven of peace for the 20 or so members” by Owen, who joined the club some 15 years ago.
“It is tucked away behind a high hedge on one side and allotments on the other,” continued Owen.
“There is a path leading to club grounds next to the entrance to Burrows. New members always comment they did not know about Leckhampton Tennis Club.”
That’s something that the club want to change. They are on the lookout for new members and believe they have plenty to offer.
“The grass courts give us a unique appeal,” said Owen, who is 76. “We are a very traditional club, very sociable.
“We play on the grass courts from the beginning of May until the end of September in beautiful surroundings looking out on to Leckhampton Hill.”
Club nights are Mondays and Thursdays and the courts are available at other times during the summer before they move to Montpellier in the winter.
Although the club no longer play league tennis, that is something that could change in the future.Copyright © 2025 The Local Answer Limited.
